Team names have a structure that people follow without noticing, and it is worth naming because it tells you where your options are. Nearly every one in existence is one of three things: a place and a mascot, a colour and a mascot, or a phrase from the sport used as a name. That is it. Everything else is one of those three wearing a hat.

The first two are the traditional forms and they are stable — nobody ever regretted the Riverside Ravens. The third is where the memorable ones live, and where the risk is: Overtime, Late Swap, Injury Time, Coin Toss. They land because everyone in the league gets the reference and nobody outside it needs to.

The mascot half, and why the plural is not automatic

Mascots are almost always plural, and the plural is where generators give themselves away. Foxs, Wolfs, Marchs — a name list that has not been read produces those within a dozen clicks. The pluralisation here is done properly, including the sibilant endings that take -es, so nothing comes out that you would have to fix before printing it on anything.

The animals themselves are the nine beasts on the banners of this site's strategy game, plus two dozen in the same key — read out of the game's own data rather than retyped into this file, so they cannot drift apart. It is a working mascot pool for the same reason heraldry is: these are the animals that read as a silhouette. A mascot you cannot draw in one colour is a mascot your team never gets a logo for.

Say it in a scoreline before you commit

The real test is not how the name looks on a list, it is how it sounds in the two sentences it will actually appear in:

• "Name 3, other team 1."
• "Right, we're playing Name on Thursday."

A name that is a full sentence fails the first. A name with an unstable stress pattern fails the second, because half the league will say it one way and half the other. Anything that survives both is fine, whatever it means.

Naming a roster is not naming a club

An esports roster and a pub team want different things, and it is the lifespan that decides. A roster that exists for one tournament can be a joke, because the joke is over before it gets old and being memorable for one weekend is the whole point. A club that intends to run for years wants a name that a completely different set of people can inherit without embarrassment — which is the same argument that governs a guild name, and for the same reason.

The tell is whether the name refers to the current members. Anything built on a running joke about your goalkeeper dies with your goalkeeper.

Twelve at a time, because this is a group decision

Team names get chosen by committee whether you plan for it or not, so the useful artefact is a shortlist rather than a single suggestion. These twelve live in the link: copy it into the group chat and everyone opens the same twelve, which is the difference between a vote and twelve people each looking at their own random list. The name is half of it

The other half is a crest for the shirt, the stream overlay or the Discord. Why the link matters more than the button

Naming a group is never one person's decision. The twelve above are a pure function of one number, and that number is in the address bar — so the link you copy opens the same twelve for everybody you send it to, and the argument can be about the names rather than about which names each of you is looking at. Roll again and the link changes with it. The copy and download buttons hand you the same list as plain text for a pinned message or a document.

Short strings like a name or a two-word motto are not the kind of thing anyone can own, and the crest you compose is your composition, not ours. Take it to a novel, a tabletop campaign, a stream overlay, a band, a boat, a business card.
