Settle an argument — whether the prince that was promised is a person or a story people needed

Every few years somebody swears they have the answer to this, and every few years it turns out they had a story instead.

What I am actually asking is whether the prince that was promised is a person or a story people needed. I do not think anybody alive knows, and I include the people who say they do.

There is a version of this where the truth is dull — a bad decision, a bad winter, nobody's grand design — and I have never once heard anybody argue for it.

Anyone who is certain about this has not thought about it long enough.
