I have seen this before. I have been on both ends of what follows. The singers are the realm's second chroniclers, and the better paid.
The songs exaggerate, and the exaggeration is the point: they store the feeling, the maesters store the facts.
Every banner needs one member who tells its story well. That role wins recruits the rankings cannot.
It cost me a keep to learn. It costs you nothing to read.
