Before anyone calls this a miracle, count the sacks, mend the bridge, inspect the hinges, because a quarter-mile of land can look small on a painted map and still become the most expensive part of the road.

The report says staff with the National Park Service have been exploring how to give a parcel inside Yosemite to Kingsbarn Realty Capital, a private developer seeking a road to a development outside the park. I cannot tell from this account what the land is worth, what obligations would follow the gift, or whether the road would bring further requests behind it. That missing arithmetic is the point.

We have seen the same shape of thing in our own realm, where a road begins as a narrow kindness between a gate and a field, then asks for a bridge, then a watchman, then repairs after the first hard weather. The first parcel is never the whole promise, only the part placed before the ledger is opened. And when land held for everyone is handed toward a private work, the question is not only what is given, but what remains to be maintained afterward.

Who pays for it? Who carries it?

I think of the winter the granary roof fell, when a full ledger proved no shelter against snow. A plan can be lawful, useful, and dressed in fine intentions, yet still leave someone holding the broken hinge. Here, the report leaves that cost unshown, and so the grand design remains only a design.

Not yet.
