Look, the flooding in Rasuwa, Nepal, has killed 469 people, according to the report, while 1,300 remain missing. Rescue operations there have been suspended because of fears that further destruction may follow as a lake overflows.

Right, in Tibet the danger has also stopped rescue work. Yet the Nepali army is still attempting to reach more than 100 people trapped in a tunnel at a hydropower project overwhelmed by the flooding. Two helicopters have been sent, though army spokesperson Raja Ram Basnet says it is difficult even to find the tunnel’s entry points.

Look, the report also says relief efforts are under way for people who have been rescued, while the army continues trying to evacuate those still inside. That wording matters: some have come out, but the operation is not finished, and the number still in danger is not made perfectly clear.

Right, a hurried reader might see “helicopter rescue operations suspended” and assume every rescue has stopped. The fuller account says the position is more divided than that: operations in Rasuwa are suspended, while a specific attempt at the tunnel continues, despite the flood risk.

Look, I know what it is to measure disaster by what cannot be recovered. When the river froze and took my whole crop, the loss was plain enough, but the waiting made it worse. Here, the dead are counted, the missing are counted, and people remain sealed in a place whose entrance the rescuers can scarcely locate. What sort of arithmetic can make that bearable?
