How the daily round works

No server picks the questions. Today's date is turned into a number, that number seeds a shuffle, and the shuffle picks five questions out of a bank of nearly fifty — so every browser that opens this page today draws the identical five, in the identical order, with the options in the identical places. Tomorrow's date produces a different draw, and yesterday's still produces yesterday's. No answer of yours is stored or requested, and there is nothing in the draw that can go down.

The day rolls over at midnight UTC, not at your local midnight. That is deliberate: local midnight would hand somebody in Auckland a different round from somebody in Los Angeles for most of the day, and the whole point of a daily is that you and the people you argue with are looking at the same puzzle.

Answer once, then find out why

Each question locks as soon as you answer it — no clicking through the options until the right one lights up. The correct answer is marked, your pick is marked, and a line underneath tells you the reason the answer is what it is. That is the part worth staying for: a round that only says "wrong" teaches nothing, and a fact you have just been told is a fact you will repeat.

Sharing a score without spoiling the round

Your score gets its own link. Open somebody else's link for today's round and you will see their score and nothing else — the five questions stay hidden, because a shared score that gives the answers away ruins the round for exactly the people it was meant to bring in. Once a round has rolled over, its link shows the full review instead: by then there is nothing left to protect.

What the questions cover

• Seats and houses — which family holds Winterfell, Casterly Rock, Riverrun, Highgarden, Pyke, Sunspear, Storm's End and the Eyrie.
• Sigils — the direwolf, the kraken, the rose, the trout, the falcon and moon, the sun and spear, the stag, the lion, the three-headed dragon.
• The map — which region holds the Arbor, Bear Island, Lannisport, Oldtown and Moat Cailin, and what the Trident, the Mander and the Kingsroad actually connect.
• Institutions — the Night's Watch, the Kingsguard, the Citadel, and the orders that outlast the families running them.
