How it works

Nine questions, four answers each, dealt at random from a bank that is bigger than the run. They are about the practical side of soldiering for money: how a contract is read, what happens to prisoners, who gets paid first when a paymaster goes quiet, and the specific order you would put down your sword rather than carry out. Every option is a real position that a real company holds, which is why none of the four is obviously the good one.

The whole thing runs where you are sitting. Nothing is uploaded, no account is created, and no request is made — the questions were in the page before you started reading, which is also why it works with no connection at all.

The six companies, all of them invented here

The Long Account — never breaks a contract, never forgives a debt, and settles both eventually.
The Ashen Spears — the disciplined ones. Poor loot, excellent survival, and a drill yard in winter.
The Salt Crows — coastal work, fast money, and a very relaxed attitude to whose ship that is.
The Quiet Company — small, expensive, and mostly employed for things that never appear in a chronicle.
The Nine Widows — took the field for a reason and stayed for the pay. Grudges with a payroll.
The Broken Anchor — everyone else's rejects, held together by a captain who will not leave anyone behind.

Why the interesting question is refusal

Anybody will fight for money; that is not a personality. What separates one company from another is where the contract stops — the order that gets refused, the town that does not get burned, the prisoner who does not get sold, the paymaster who does not get robbed even though he could be. Companies live and die on the reputation those refusals build, because the next contract is always signed by somebody who asked around first. So the quiz is built around limits rather than around bravery, and the verdict is really a description of yours.
