Exile is a practical problem before it is a tragic one. You have one boat, whatever you could carry, and a trade that may or may not travel. Nine questions about work, weather, noise and how you feel about starting again — and the city across the narrow sea that would actually suit you.

How it works
Nine questions, four answers each, dealt at random out of a bigger bank. They are the questions an actual refugee answers rather than the ones a story does: what you can do that somebody would pay for, whether you can bear heat, how you feel about crowds, what you would take if you could take one thing, and whether you intend to go back. The city at the end follows from those, not from which one sounds most impressive.
Nothing you answer leaves the page, and there is nothing to sign up for. The questions arrived with the file, so it runs instantly and keeps working with the network off.
The seven cities
- Braavos — cold, wet, secretive, and the only one of them that abolished slavery and means it. Work is everywhere and nobody asks who you were.
- Pentos — comfortable, corrupt and close. The easy landing, and the one that costs you something you will notice later.
- Volantis — vast, ancient, hot, and divided by a wall into two entirely different lives. You will be told which side you are on.
- Lys — beautiful, pleasant, and built on an economy nobody discusses at dinner. It will be very kind to you and you will not be comfortable.
- Myr — the workshop city: glass, lenses, lace and precision. Bring a skill or bring nothing.
- Norvos — up the river, austere, religious, and cold in every sense. It will take you if you can stand the rules.
- Lorath — the quiet one nobody names. Islands, ruins, fog, and the smallest possible number of neighbours.
What exile is actually like
The romantic version has a cloak and a dramatic departure. The real version is a language you speak badly, a trade that turns out not to transfer, a set of manners that keep going slightly wrong, and the discovery that the thing you miss is not the country but a specific street. Cities differ enormously in how they treat that. Some of them absorb strangers as a matter of civic pride; some of them will let you live there for forty years and remain a visitor. The questions here are about which of those you could stand, because that — far more than climate or wealth — is what decides whether an exile makes a life or merely waits.
