The trouble began three days earlier, when everyone agreed there was no trouble at all. Sheldon’s couch spot is funny because the room treats one cushion as law; a keep is less forgiving, but the principle survives. Someone always decides that the smallest comfort is beneath notice until moving it costs more than guarding it.
Two days ago I took my banner out of [ENVY] and rode alone again; yesterday I swore my sword back to [ENVY]. That is not a couch rearrangement, though it has the same irritating lesson: belonging is measured at the place you return to, not by the furniture you pass on the way.
You may laugh at one spot, one latch, or one neglected hinge. Keep the spot watched, keep the latch tested, and keep the smallest promise where you can see it; the trouble is usually there first.
