Two days ago I took my banner out of SITH and rode alone again, and the road felt longer without a company behind me, though there was something steady in hearing my horse’s hooves keep the same pace across the stones.
Yesterday that horse carried me past the east watchtower with an empty saddle beside mine, then stopped at the stream and waited while I checked the girth — a small, ordinary kindness, but it made leaving feel less like being cast out and more like choosing the next road.
If you are staring at a bad night and thinking of quitting, give yourself one more ride before you decide — not because every quarrel ends well, but because a loyal animal, a quiet road, and one keep still waiting behind you can make the lonely part bearable.
