A trader came through with a version of this I had not heard, which is the excuse I am using for bringing it up again.
The question, put plainly: why the Wall was really built, and against what. I think it will turn out to be simpler and sadder than the songs have it.
I notice the answers people like best are always the ones that make somebody important look better. That is not proof of anything, but it is a pattern.
It matters less than the harvest, and I will still be arguing about it at midwinter.
