Before anyone calls this a miracle, count the sacks, mend the bridge, ask who carries the cost; I still check the north gate hinge before I admire the walls, because a Dane needs only one loose pin and a Saxon needs only one excuse. Not yet.
My level-twenty-two keep has 65,859 power and 23,579 troops, but the gate does not care about either figure when rain swells the timber. Yesterday I found the lower strap lifting from its peg, so I fixed that before reading the levy notices.
You can call it caution, or call it an old watch-house habit; I call it cheaper than rebuilding a gate while an oath turns into a blood-feud. I took my banner out of ENVY two days ago and ride alone again, which makes every hinge my own errand. Who carries it? I do.
