The first man to say the gate would hold had never stood beneath it. I left Stonewatch’s chapel bell behind when its rope froze, and no siege film has made that loss feel real.
I watched two famous siege films, but their bells only announce spectacle. Can anyone name a film that makes a bell sound like something a retreating man can never carry?
