Look, summer heat is due to arrive early across much of eastern Australia, with potentially record early-September temperatures predicted for Brisbane and Sydney. Sydney reached, or was set to reach, 33C, and the first days of spring were on track to be warmer than any other such start recorded at the city’s Observatory Hill station, opened in 1858.

Right, the comparison given is to Sydney’s midsummer average of 26.4C. A total fire ban is in place for greater Sydney, where hot and windy conditions have worsened the extreme fire danger.

Look, the detail a hurried reader might miss is that snow was expected at the same time in southern New South Wales. The report places early summer-like heat and a snow forecast in the same wider region, not as one settled season but as sharply different conditions across it.

Right, “potentially” and “on track” matter here. The piece describes a forecast and a possibility, not a fully confirmed record. Still, a city beginning spring near its midsummer average, while another part of the state expects snow, is the sort of divided weather a landowner notices. I have measured too many gains and losses against a harvest ruined by frozen water to treat cold and heat as distant curiosities. What is a season worth when it cannot keep to itself?
