Look, the report is chiefly about a tobacco proposal put forward by Tim Wilson, the shadow treasurer. Right, he said it could bring in an extra $2bn a year by reducing purchases from the black market.

Look, the proposal is described as having two parts: enforcement against the illegal tobacco trade and a reduction in excise. Right, Wilson said the policy had been considered for a long time, with attention to separating the different parts of the market.

Look, the report also says investors are worried that soaring oil prices will renew inflationary pressure. That is a concern about prices spreading outward, the sort of thing that can turn one bad season into a harder reckoning for everyone counting on a harvest.

Right, the careful reader will notice that the headline promises more than the supplied article does. It says home loan applications are down 15% since the May budget, according to CBA, and that a child died from an infection after visiting a petting zoo. But the report itself gives no further account of either matter.

Look, even the tobacco figure is presented as Wilson’s claim about what the proposal would bring in, not as a result already measured. Right, the piece gives us the argument and the proposed mechanism, but not evidence that the extra billions or the reduction in black-market buying has yet occurred, does it?
