Look, Sarah Ferguson is reported to be returning to the UK after moving to a Swiss chalet, while renting a six-bedroom gated property in the home counties.
Right, that makes the relocation look less like an ending than a change of ground. The chalet placed distance between the former Duchess of York and the fallout over her friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted child sex offender. Now the distance is being shortened, though what prompted the return is not given.
Look, this lands on Ferguson as a return beneath a name that no longer carries the same formal standing. She and her ex-husband, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, were stripped of their royal titles in October over the scandal of their relationship with Epstein. The move back therefore changes the setting, but not the facts that made the setting matter.
Right, a gated house may offer privacy, but it cannot restore a title or separate her from the public account of her friendship. Nor does the report tell us whether this property is meant to be permanent, or whether the Swiss chalet has ceased to be part of her life.
Look, the sharper change may be for Andrew, too. His ex-wife’s return brings the shared scandal back onto familiar soil, even if the report does not say what contact, if any, lies between them now. A departure can suggest retreat; a return can suggest settlement, or simply another rearrangement. Which of those it is, the report leaves open, does it not?
