Thirty years of this and the same mistake every spring. I wasted my first month optimising the wrong thing.
The lords who pull ahead are not playing more, they are wasting less.
A speed-up on a five-minute build is a speed-up thrown away.
Do it properly the first time. I did not. Take it from someone who lost the argument.
