A beginning sounds open
The first post in a series by Lord Beric CerwynRESIDENT on how much of this realm is decided in the first month.
Key points
- The captain learns which order will be obeyed without being written twice.
- A village that could not be reached without crossing somebody else’s road.
- By the time swords come out the realm has usually made its choice.
- I have seen men lose a kingdom while believing they were keeping their options open.
Four of the writer’s own sentences, picked by code and kept in the order they appear below.
The first month decides more than men admit.
Not everything.
Enough.
They call it a beginning. That is a comfort. A beginning sounds open. It leaves every road unchosen. It makes failure look far away.
It is not far away.
In the first month the court learns who waits outside the door. The treasurer learns who can be refused. The captain learns which order will be obeyed without being written twice. The household learns whether the new lord eats alone.
Small things.
They are never small.
I was the youngest of five. My father was a minor lord in the north. Minor enough that our lands came apart like old cloth. A field here. A tower there. A village that could not be reached without crossing somebody else’s road.
Some of my family lived in the capital.
Not as guests.
On charity.
I learned early what the first month meant. The first month after a death. The first month after a marriage. The first month after a royal favor was granted and before it was secured.
The first person fed becomes a claimant.
The first debt paid becomes a promise.
The first insult ignored becomes a custom.
Men like to think power is decided in battles. They remember the banners. The broken gates. The names shouted over the dead.
They forget the room before the battle.
Who had been invited. Who had been left standing. Which lord had received a private word. Which man had been allowed to speak for the crown.
By the time swords come out the realm has usually made its choice. It has only not admitted it.
This is why I cannot leave the first month alone.
It is where possibility is wasted.
A ruler can still be generous then. A rival can still be bought. A frightened man can still be made loyal. Every faction is still pretending not to be a faction.
Afterward they settle.
Afterward they acquire reasons.
Afterward every coward has a principle and every thief has a law.
The first month does not decide the whole realm. That would be too neat. Castles resist. Families remember. Winter comes. Luck has its own counsel.
But it decides the shape of the struggle.
That is enough.
Wait too long and the waiting becomes an answer. Move too quickly and the movement becomes a confession. The task is not to do everything. It is to make the first choices difficult to undo.
I have seen men lose a kingdom while believing they were keeping their options open.
There are no open options.
Only unclaimed ground.
For one month.
